Anyone have experience with one of those glass repair places? You know, the ones that inject some sort of resin into these little chips to keep them from getting bigger and stopping the owner of the vehicle from going irate over this infuriating nick in the middle of their field of view.

Key needed to get the potato camera to focus, which it did pretty well, for once.

On a related note, fuck semi trucks, fuck gravel roads and fuck the county snow trucks for throwing sand/gravel on perfectly good paved roads only for some asshole gravel truck to come flying in the opposite direction and blast my windshield with all that shit strewn all over the road. There, I feel better.

Yeah, it works, but you'll always see the repair, (damn refraction).

Yeah I had a pro do a couple in my Merc windscreen, I can't even see them now. Sometimes there is a pocket they can't get to, they usually do the best they can and don't charge you if its not great. He charged me for two and on another car he couldn't make it perfect so he just say it was cool. I use a detailer that does my car once a year or so.

Yes, a "friend of mine" had a rental vehicle and noticed the next day that there was a chip in the windshield. Went to one of those places and got it fixed. You could see it but not as easily. When the vehicle was turned back in, it was raining and dark.

No harm no foul I say. Or my friend says. Pick one.

My father is C-U-R-S-E-D for rock chips. We always went to a local Speedy Glass, for $40 each time it chipped.

It's a quick fix but will save your windshield from a larger crack for the time being.

Do it yourself. It's super simple, just be careful with the little injector tool. I want all caveman with it and broke it, I ended up having to buy another kit. Just be gentle and it will be fine.

I've actually been very lucky in this regard. I live on a gravel road and while I try to avoid driving on them too much I've had some pretty big rocks peg off the windshield and none ever left a mark.

My luck just ran out this time, I guess. It was a bunch of smaller but very fast moving stones. No loud bangs like a bigger rock would do, just quick blast followed by me having a close look at the windshield, trying to clear it with washer fluid, then swearing.

I've had a bunch of these little chips, and every time I got them repaired at the same glass place. It's noticeable if you look for it, but not as bad as the chip and it can stop a larger crack from forming.

Doesn't insurance usually cover these?

Depends. Never had to deal with insurance for it, except when the windshield cracked due to not filling it in and had to be replaced.

I hope so. My luck just ran out for this. Our 10 year old Mazda 3 has nary a mark on the windahield to show for some of the crap that has pegged off that one (stones big enough to make me duck). My car is 4 months old and I get this. :<

C'est la vie, I guess, but it still sucks.

Consider yourself lucky. A fucking pebble hit my car about w week ago, there is no nick, just a giant crack going all the way across. Anyway, $50 deductible, so it isn't all bad.

Interesting. I'll probably get it fixed when I'm running errands on Wednesday but I may order one of those for an inevitable future recurrence. Thanks for the tip.

I don't think you have to, but in my experience they'll pay for it, I would imagine to avoid paying for a windshield replacement if it develops into a large crack at some point down the line. I've had to do this maybe four or five times now, and every time somebody in the shop has just called the insurance company while it was being done and I haven't had to pay a thing for it.

Oh, I do, I've definitely been lucky with windshield damage living where I do. I'm also gonna check on the glass coverage for my insurance. It won't be worth going through for this but I'd like to make sure I have coverage if it comes to a replacement like yours.

I have one low and to the right of my sightline. I'm secretly hoping it'll turn into a full blown crack someday so I can have an excuse to get a new windshield. Damn thing is so old and pockmarked it is hard to see out of when the sun is low and directly ahead.

welcome to (I assume from the key) VW ownership. I had my windshield replaced within the first year of ownership cause a rock caused a crack. Stupid thin glass to 'save weight'

Yup, it's aggrevating. The previous car never got one for the 5+ years I had it, this one is just 4 months old. :(

You assume correctly, '15 Golf. I wouldnt think the glass is too thin as VW does pride itself on a quiet cabin. I do hope it doesn't make a habit out of this though because that'll get old really quick.

If you have full coverage, it may be covered if it's in your line of sight.

Yeah, it's in the middle of my field of view, just below where i focus my eyes most of the time so it's distracting. I think I'm fairly well insured but you know companies love to nickel and dime you for every little thing. I'm gonna check with my broker tomorrow to see if it's covered and, if it is, whether going through them for a repair would affect my premiums at all.

Yeah, the golf/gti atleast has an 'insulated windscreen' which keeps the noise out, but the glass guy showed me my windscreen vs one off an older car. It was half as thick. Its crazy.

I will say i havent had any more issues and i'm up to 4 years of ownership. waterpumps, however...about to have my second replacement put in. :/
